Is a food intolerance test right for you? Is a food intolerance test right for you?
If you are suffering from:
a) digestive symptoms such as bloating or constipation, gas or diarrhoea
b)headaches
c)skin rashes ie eczema or outbreaks of acne
d)fatigue
e)sinusitis
Any of the above can be linked to a food intolerance and often displays itself as a delayed reaction ie from 2 hours to 2 days. This is known as an IgG reaction. Where as a true allergy is instant such as a swollen or itchy tongue as soon as you eat something. This is known as an IgE reaction.
Delayed reactions therefore may be harder to identify.
People may also display multiple symptoms and quite often if you have chronic constipation it may be linked to your chronic headache or skin rash. To make more sense of this when you eat something, it goes through a digestive process requiring stomach acid, digestive enzymes to breakdown down the food and absorb it via the first 12 inches of the small intestine. Then waste from the food which includes insoluble fibre, soluble fibre, dead cells and excess bile and hormones such as oestrogen (sent from the liver) are excreted via the large colon. For this waste to form a healthy looking stool it requires water and healthy muscular movement of the colon called peristalsis. The food should ideally be evacuated every 24 hours from ingesting.
With our busy and stressful lives the above does not always go to plan.
If our body is in a state of flight or fight it switches off stomach acid, digestive enzymes which can lead to bloating and constipation. Then toxins in the gut are produced from an increase in fermenting bacteria which then will quite often be displayed in the skin as a rash (also a detox organ) and for other people as a headache.
As a nutritionist with 20 years experience I can quite often see from a persons diet and lifestyle what foods are causing these problems and help work through an elimination diet with supplement support to boost the body's digestive functions.
By having a food intolerance test first, can help estimate specific food groups and how stricter protocol you may need to follow, but at the same time not losing out on essential nutrients to help your body to function at its best.
While techniques involving meditation and focusing on our breath can help our body move into the rest and digest phase. This helps tone the vagus nerve which is known as the wondering nerve which travels down to your heart and stomach and branches out into the neck and ear. No wonder we get tense muscles when we are stressed!
